The Playa del Carmen airport is a small airstrip located in the center of town, lying slightly northeast of the Playacar residential area.
It’s not a large airport by any means and has nothing on the sprawling Cancun International Airport just 45 minutes away.
However, it is a great option for those looking to fly in or out of on a Playa del Carmen charter onboard a smaller Cessna passenger plane.
Here are a few things you should know about the airport.
#1 There are no Playa del Carmen flights from major airlines
Unfortunately, the size of the Playa del Carmen airport doesn’t permit the landing of larger passenger planes. While plans are underway to develop an additional airfield just outside of the city, discussions are still in an initial stage and it’s more of a mid to long-term project than something that will change anytime soon.
In the meantime, the largest passenger planes that can land here for Playa del Carmen flights seat about 20 people.
Flying with Delta, American Airlines, United or any other major carrier? You’ll need to fly into Cancun, Cozumel or Merida.
#2 There are several other neighboring airports and airfields
While the Yucatan Peninsula is home to three major airports, Cancun International Airport, Cozumel International Airport and Merida International Airport, there are several smaller airstrips that allow smaller aircraft to land.
At Fly Playa, we offer the possibility to arrange airplane charters to these exciting destinations from Playa del Carmen such as:
These charters are generally round-trip flights departing and arriving on the same day. However, it’s also possible to customize your itinerary with a return flight on a different date.
#3 Playa del Carmen weather can play a factor
Because we operate smaller aircraft, we are more subject to the whims of Mother Nature.
As such, our Playa del Carmen tours and charter flights can occasionally be postponed on the account of inclement weather.
Please note that cancellations due to weather conditions and force majeure are subject to full reimbursements.

#4 There are several companies operating out of the Playa del Carmen airport
Fly Playa is a new company to Playa del Carmen, but we’ve been working out of Cozumel Island as Fly Cozumel for the past two years.
Our TripAdvisor reviews for Cozumel will give you a good picture of our company and our values.
In addition to flights and charters, you’ll also find the option of skydiving over Playa del Carmen.
Whoever you choose for your airport service, make sure to check their online reviews, including Facebook, and ask any question you may have prior to making your decision.
#5 You can take an introductory flying course or go on an aerial photography excursion
Taking a charter flight from Playa del Carmen doesn’t just have to be about getting from Point A to Point B.
Rather, you can take advantage of the possibility to customize your itinerary and organize the perfect day of flying.
Among other options, you can take a Discovery Flight excursion where you get to learn the ins and outs about piloting a Cessna airplane.
